Near accident
On Tuesday after work, my colleague and me shared a cab, he to Parkway and me back home. It was raining in the afternoon but the rain had stopped, but the road is still wet.
So we were traveling on the ECP, as it was the evening peak hour, so the traffic was rather slow and were traveling at the extreme right lane at maybe about 40km/h. After we passed the Shears Bridge suddenly the driver lost control of the cab, and the cab started to swirl left and right and skidded. As we were at the extreme right lane so we were beside the center partition of the expressway, so when the taxi skidded we nearly clashed into the railings of the center partition, lucky the driver when saw that tried to turn the steering wheel to compensate back and it worked. We skidded left and right for about 2-3 seconds before the car came to a stop. Luckily the car behind did not crash into us.
Thank God that no harm happened to us, and due to the traffic condition we were traveling slow. If we were traveling any faster during the time, I think we would have crashed into the partition or worse the cab could have flipped over or crash into other cars. And also because every car was slow, the cars behind had time to react and not crashed into us. So after we stopped, the driver alighted and checked on the wheels, but there was no problem, so maybe there was some oil puddle or water puddle and we went over it.
Thank God for the protection.

Yup thank God. There were a few times that the old car (yellow duck) skidded due to the lousy brakes and it was near accident, but thank God nothing happened like that. Scary though.

Hmm.... good testimony. God was the One protecting you. So, its not (quote)"lucky the driver when saw...." and "Luckily the car behind did not crash into us." It is not Luck that saved you and ur friend... It was God's doing. You gave thanks to God and that's good but i think we Christians should refrain from using the word "luck" but use "thank God that....". :)

Depends on how we see it. To me luck is also given to me by God, when we use the word luck, it means that good things happened. These good things when viewed by non-christians or people who are supertisious will say that it is by chance or from their lucky charm etc, but when we Chritians uses this word, most of us will mean that nothing bad happened and it is a grace from God.
In the dictionary, luck means 'chance'. In many things, especially for Christians, we have to be aware of the people around us. We can't say that what i speak, i do not care about what others may think or interpret. The word 'luck' to you may mean God gave or caused this luck to you. But this is a blog that everyone can read. Do you think non-Christians will understand the word 'luck' as the way you understood it to be? We need to see deeper into whatever we want to do or say. As the Bible says that our tongue can set afire a forest. Let me quote a classic example. A non TJC Christian may say i whish you merry Christmas is good and OK. They may also argue that Christmas is a noble day with great opportunity to preach to people eventhough Christ was not actually born on that day! These are few of the many reasons why non TJC Christians will explain and abide by. But is it really OK? We all in TJC knows that Christmas' origin was paganistic, and this is one of the reasons why TJC does not celebrate it. If you apply what you say about the word 'luck' into this example, you'll see what i mean.
Don't be offended, this is just for reminder and discussion. :)

do you know that there are a few meanings to the word luck? One of it is as you say is chance, another is: "the events or circumstances that operate for or against an individual" This is what i meant good things happening to me.
To me if just because people have different understanding of a word or phase we should not use it, then there are lots of things that we cannot speak. For example i tell people Baptism saves, a christian from another church will say yah, i am saved coz i have gone through "baptism". But actually we know that their baptism cannot save because theirs is not accordance to the mode of baptism etc. But does that mean we cannot use the word baptism because people will misunderstand? Of course not right? We will of course if given time or chance explain to people what we understand of the word or phase just like what we are doing here now.
Your example of "Merry Christmas" to me is not a valid example because first of all christmas as you said is of a pagan begin, but is the word luck of a pagen begin? i dont think so, so it is just like my example, different people understand a word differently right? No onw will understand "Merry christmas" differently i think...
Anyway dun worry, no offence taken :) Hope you too. This to me is just an interesting dicussion where both parties write down our views on a thing.

Well said indeed. There are many things we can't say or use if it is so strict. We are all saved and freed from bondage of sins. We can do all things but not all things edify. :)
Anyway, i'm not suggesting that we can't say 'luck' but it is better to refrain using it at the best we can. Thank God that there are still many alternatives in choosing the words we use. As I've said before, we can always use "Thank God that....". We are the salt of the earth, so it is best we choose words that will not cause others to doubt or stumble. BTW, "luck" is always used by idol worshippers(esp Chinese) in conjunction with extra wealth that could come their way, as in "LUCKY DRAW", "LUCKY CHARMS", "LUCKY NUMBERS", etc. Because this word is always associated with things pertaining to chances and superstitions, so we as Christian should choose other words that God has given human kind wisdom to creat. :)
